Our courses

Orientation - 4 clock hours

  • Program introduction, school guidelines review as set forth by New York State’s Department of Education policies, overview of the Appearance Enhancement Law booklet, Student Assessment exam and handouts.  

Safety & Health - 10 clock hours

  • Apply solutions, ointments, creams and other first aid products such as band-aid, bandage, ice pack, and heating pad to patient in the event of mild and temporary discomfort.
  • Organize and maintain first aid kit.
  • Recognize patient symptoms that require the care of a physician.
  • Maintain and manage a work area that adheres to local, state and federal safety codes.
  • Interpret hazardous materials, communications and material safety data sheets.

Bacteriology - 18 clock hours

  • Apply a principle or theory of bacteriology to address a real life situation they may encounter as an Aesthetician in the areas of sanitation, sterilization and disinfection.
  • Perform and demonstrate a sanitizing method or process in order to eliminate bacteria in the work area and throughout the salon.
  • Perform and demonstrate a sterilization method or process by using various techniques such as heat (steam or hot air), chemical sterilant, or gas.
  • Perform and demonstrate a disinfection method or process in order to eliminate pathogenic microorganisms on an inanimate object.
  • Mix a solute into a liquid sterilant.
  • Use a UV sterilizer or an autoclave.
  • Interpret and adhere to OSHA rules and regulations regarding the identification and elimination of bacteria from the work place.
  • Use a hard container for the disposal of lancets and follow OSHA procedures for the disposal from the workplace.

Anatomy, Physiology & Nutrition - 25 clock hours

  • Discuss cells, tissues and organs, and how they work together to form the body's systems.
  • Describe muscular structures and functions, and the various nerves that are affected during facial treatments.
  • Study of cranium, bones, and musculature.
  • Explain the functions of the circulatory system and the importance of blood and lymph circulation.

Structure & Function of the Skin - 15 clock hours

  • Analyze the body's most visible system, on that often defines our very self image.
  • Describe the various layers of the epidermis and dermis as well as the cells that comprise the skin.
  • Compare the structure, distribution and functions of the hair, skin glands, and nails.
  • Educate the client about the basic function of their skin.
  • Locate and name the structural layers in sequence.
  • Define skin conditions.
  • Cosmetic and disease referral.
  • Patient confidentiality.

Superfluous Hair - 28 clock hours

  • Theoretical overview of permanent hair removal and techniques for temporary hair removal and bleaching of the hair.
  • Apply and remove both hard and soft wax.
  • Tweezing.
  • Intense Pulse Light permanent hair reduction.
  • Identify Proper precautions.

Chemistry as Applied to Cosmetics - 24 clock hours

  • Why is chemistry important to the Aesthetician?
  • Properties of matter, elements, compounds, and mixtures.
  • The pH scale.
  • Select products that are contraindicated for clients that use certain pharmaceutical topical and oral medication in order to prevent negative skin reactions.
  • Analyze the clients skin type and select the appropriate products for use in treating the skin by methods such as cleansing, toning, moisturizing, treatment cream and mask, and other techniques.
  • Demonstrate the proper use of skin care products.
  • Distinguish between cosmetic products and Cosmeceutical products in relation to pH value of the client's skin type as governed by the FDA.
  • Comply with FDA rules and regulations in the advertising and sale of cosmetic products.
  • Integrate a theory or principle of chemistry into a promotional/marketing plan in order to sell cosmetic products.

Electricity & Machines - 30 clock hours

  • Explain electricity and safety practices.
  • Identify and describe the machines used in skin analysis.
  • Explain the function and maintenance of each machine.
  • Explain why galvanic current is used.
  • Define high frequency and its benefits.
  • Demonstrate galvanic and high frequency machines.
  • Perform use of machines.
  • Demonstrate and explain the vacuum and spray machine.
  • Explain and demonstrate the electric mask and treatment mitts.
  • Explain and demonstrate how to use the magnifying lamp, Syris illuminating light, the skin scope, and the Wood's Lamp.
  • Explain light therapy.
  • Demonstrate use of the Canfield imaging system.
  • Perform the GentleWaves LED photo modulation.
  • Explain and demonstrate LPG Endermologie.
  • Demonstrate how Microdermabrasion works and its benefits.

  • Overview of skin care products.
  • Selection of products to plan a treatment.

  • A natural daytime look.
  • A glamour evening make-up and bridal formal wear.
  • Concealing and camouflage for an even finish.
  • Highlighting, shading and contouring for illusions.

  • Preparing the skin before makeup.
  • Retailing skin care and make-up products to the consumer.

Business Practices - 50 clock hours

  • Develop students marketable skills for self-employment or job opportunities.

Introduction to Paramedical Aesthetics - 20 clock hours

  • Discuss dermatological or cosmetic surgery procedures.
  • Refer patient to a physician when procedures with a client do not fall into scope of aesthetic licensure.
